The piece "Collatinus and Lucretia" is a scene from act two which is not gone into detail in Livy's account of the story: "She (Lucretia) welcomed the arrival of her husband (Collatinus) and the Tarquins, whilst her victorious spouse courteously invited the royal princes to remain as his guests. Sextus Tarquin, inflamed by the beauty and exemplary purity of Lucretia, formed the vile project of effecting her dishonour." (Livy, "History of Rome" Book 1, 57:10)
The piece dips into the details of emotions and reflects the love between Lucretia and Collatinus, and contrasts it with the Tarquins mocking the love between them and the envy of Sextus Tarquin.
Hall's first Wind Quartet, Written in the Spring of 2023, 'On Lake Shenandoah' is a piece that captures the feeling of a spring day on Lake Shenandoah (located in Rockingham County, VA). Starting with the marshy dew of the morning, the piece then progresses to lay witness to the bustle of families and fishermen, before finally arriving with the feeling of watching a sunset on a spring day.
Written in the Fall of 2022, the first images of ‘Stargazing’ were after I had read a book written by one of my friends from high school. The book, titled ‘Chasing Daylight,’ had imagery of a girl jumping across rooftops during the night. I found this vision of almost flight to be so inspiring, that when I sat down at the piano, that picture of a girl gliding across rooftops, stared it painting itself, using the keys as the assorted colors.
However, this piece has come to mean much more than a simple reference to a book, as it ended up reflecting my feelings entering college, post graduation, and being, for the first time ever, apart from everyone I loved. For that entire summer before I had been mourning the loss of my childhood however, past the initial frightens of this new setting, I mourned no more and took comfort in watching the stars. To me the stars were reminders of the past not just in how distant they are but how beautiful and unchanging they are.
My epiphany led me to feel and write about two things in this piece, pure Joy, and pure love. For even though we may move away, and change everything, the love and joy of the past stay ever eternalized, and nothing screams that more, then the stars.
